This checklist is for safety managers, facility supervisors, and industrial buyers who need to get safety gear right the first time — not after an incident report lands on their desk.

Six steps. Each one has a checkpoint. Skip a step and you'll find out eventually, usually at the worst possible moment.

I run procurement and emergency prep for a mid-size industrial supplier. In my role coordinating PPE and first aid supply for construction and facility clients, I've seen the same six mistakes repeat across job sites. This is my short version of how to avoid them.

Step 1: Match the First Aid Kit to ANSI Z308.1 — Not to the Sticker Price

From the outside, all first aid kits look the same. A plastic box with a white cross. The reality is that ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021 breaks kits into classes (A and B) and types (I–IV) based on hazard level and portability. A Class A kit for a quiet office is not the same thing as a Class B kit for a welding bay.

Here's the thing: most buyers grab whatever's on the shelf and call it compliant. Then an OSHA inspector — or worse, a serious injury — reveals the gap.

Checkpoint:

  1. Identify your work environment's hazard class. Heavy machinery, chemicals, or welding? You want Class B.
  2. Check the ANSI label on the kit itself. If it doesn't list a current Z308.1 compliance year, it's a red flag.
  3. Verify the quantity of each item matches the standard — not just the presence of items.

Step 2: Stock WoundSeal 90327 Where Bleeding Actually Happens

First Aid Only WoundSeal Blood Clot Powder 90327 is a single-use topical hemostatic powder. It's not a replacement for a tourniquet or pressure dressing in a major bleed. What it does well: small cuts and abrasions in environments where you can't afford to stop work for a bandage.

I keep it in the field kits for concrete crews. In my experience, the 90327 unit gets used more than anything else in the kit during a normal quarter — mostly on knuckle and shin injuries that would otherwise bleed through a glove or sock.

Checkpoint:

  • Store 90327 in the kit that's closest to the hazard, not locked in a supply closet.

  • Train at least two people per shift on application. One trained person is a single point of failure.

People assume safety glasses are all roughly the same. What they don't see is how fit and fogging drive real-world compliance. If a worker takes them off because they're uncomfortable, the protection factor drops to zero.

Heat wave safety glasses — the kind designed for high-temp environments — need three things: anti-fog coating, side protection that meets ANSI Z87.1, and a nose bridge that doesn't slide when someone's sweating.

I've tested maybe a dozen models across two summer seasons. The cheap ones fog. The expensive ones don't always fit. The ones that work are boring-looking and cost somewhere in the middle.

  1. Confirm the ANSI Z87.1 marking on the lens or frame. No marking, no compliance.
  2. Test in the actual environment — walk into the hot zone for 10 minutes before you buy 200 pairs.
  3. Buy a mix of sizes if you have a mixed crew. One-size-fits-all is a no-brainer lie.

Step 4: Fit the Tactical Vest for the Job You Have

Tactical vests get sold like fashion. They get used like toolbelts. If your team is wearing a tactical vest for equipment carry — radios, tools, medical pouches — fit matters more than MOLLE coverage.

A too-tight vest restricts breathing and gets taken off. A too-loose vest shifts and catches on equipment. Neither is a safety improvement.

  • Measure over the layers they'll actually wear — not over a t-shirt in a climate-controlled office.
  • Distribute weight evenly. A vest that's front-heavy causes back strain within an hour.
  • If you're issuing a duty-style vest for a non-duty role, skip it. The optics aren't worth the discomfort. Simple.

Step 5: Learn Handcuff Basics — and Know Where Your Expertise Ends

I'm not a certified law enforcement trainer, so I can't speak to defensive tactics or legal use-of-force standards. What I can tell you from a procurement and safety perspective is this: if your facility issues handcuffs to security staff, the training burden is on your organization, not the equipment vendor.

Basic mechanics that any security lead should verify:

  1. Double-lock the cuffs. Single-locked cuffs can over-tighten. Double-lock prevents that.
  2. Check for proper fit. One finger should fit between the cuff and the wrist. Too loose allows slipping; too tight risks nerve compression.
  3. Always check for injuries after removal. Document it. Every time.

This gets into legal and defensive-tactics territory, which isn't my expertise. I'd recommend consulting a certified instructor before finalizing any use policy.

Step 6: Audit and Rotate Every 90 Days

Even after setting up our audit schedule, I kept second-guessing. What if quarterly wasn't often enough? The first year we ran it, we found 14 expired items across 40 kits. The second year, nine. It's getting better, but it's never zero.

Checkpoint:

  • Set a calendar reminder. Not a mental note. A calendar reminder.
  • Log every expired or missing item in a spreadsheet that someone besides you can access.
  • Assign a backup auditor. If you're the only one who knows the process, that's a risk.

Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money

Mistake 1: Assuming "ANSI-compliant" means interchangeable. Different classes, different requirements. Read the label, not the marketing copy.

Mistake 2: Buying hemostatic powder and never training on it. An unused product isn't a safety product. It's inventory.

Mistake 3: Chasing the lowest quote on safety glasses. Bottom line: you'll buy them twice — once cheap, once correct.

Total cost of ownership on PPE includes base price, replacement frequency, training time, and the cost of a compliance failure. The lowest quoted price is often the most expensive option over 12 months.

Look, none of this is glamorous. It's just checking boxes before something forces you to. That's the whole point.
