Stop Buying Safety Gear on Price: What a First Aid Kit and an Electric Fence Taught Me

Unit price is not the cost. I wish someone had made me memorize that before I ordered a 'first aid only emergency kit' for my first warehouse. The cheap kit looked complete in the photo. It wasn't. If the product is not safety-critical, if the supplier has a proven record, and if the specification is identical, then going with the lowest price is not a mistake. I still buy value-priced signage for non-safety labels and generic tape for shipping boxes. But I no longer do that for anything that protects against a hazard.

The boundary line is simple: if a failure can cause an injury, a shutdown, or a compliance finding, then the spec matters more than the price. If a failure only costs a few pennies and a shrug, cheaper is fine. The problem only starts when you mix up the two categories. Don't do that. Check the spec, calculate the total cost, and buy the item that actually does the job.
