A First Aid Only Emergency Kit Won't Fix What's Actually Broken

You're Asking the Wrong Question

Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available.

Adequate is a loaded word. It doesn't mean 'something with a red cross on it.' It means enough of the right supplies for the specific injuries you're likely to have. That's why ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021 separates first aid kits into Class A and Class B. Class A covers minimum contents for common workplace injuries. Class B holds more supplies for higher-risk environments.

So a first aid only emergency kit is a starting point—not an endpoint. The deep problem isn't the cabinet. It's the absence of a system that keeps the kit stocked, current, and matched to the hazard. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 separates hard hats by impact direction and electrical protection. Type I handles top impacts; Type II handles top and lateral impacts. Class E provides high-voltage dielectric protection; Class G provides general voltage protection; Class C offers no electrical protection.

I once watched a crew show up for a commercial electrical job wearing Type I, Class C bump caps labeled as hard hats. They looked great in the company truck. When the general contractor's competent person opened the spec sheet, the job was a hard stop. It wasn't because the brand was wrong. It was because the standard was wrong for the task.

Navy Coveralls: Color Doesn't Equal Coverage

Navy coveralls are a classic pick for mechanics, field service, and shops. I'll say it plainly: the color is irrelevant to compliance. What matters is the fabric standard. If the hazard assessment includes flash fire, you need flame-resistant coveralls verified to NFPA 2112. If the risk is arc flash, you need arc-rated clothing consistent with NFPA 70E. The mistake is assuming that darker fabric means ruggedness. The fabric certification, stitching, and care instructions are the real deal. I'd rather have a $60 pair of FR navy coveralls that meets the right standard than a $150 non-rated pair that looks tougher but can melt to skin in a fire. (Not that I'm being dramatic. I've just seen the spec sheets.)

The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong

By now you're wondering why I'm spending so much time on the problem. Because the cost of the wrong product is not the product price. It's the audit failure, the shutdown, the injury, the contract, and the trust.

Here's a specific regret of mine. In March 2024, a client needed 40 navy coveralls for a crew starting a new project. Third, buy to the standard, not the hype. A Klein hard hat, navy coveralls, and a steel toe boot are excellent when they match the hazard. They become expensive decorations when they don't.

I still kick myself for not asking for a hazard assessment on that first big rush order. If I had, we'd have skipped the $400 in overnight freight and 14 hours of stress. The good news is you don't need to make that mistake. Start with the problem. The product will follow.
