First-Aid-Only Kits vs. Custom Kits: A Safety QA Inspector's Comparison

I'm a quality compliance manager for a safety supply company. I review 200+ unique SKUs every year—first aid kits, welding gloves, fire extinguishers, all of it—before they hit the shelf. In 2024 I rejected about 12% of first deliveries because the specs didn't match what the vendor promised.

Today I'm comparing two approaches that buyers ask me about all the time: buying a pre-assembled First Aid Only kit vs. building your own kit from a parts list. Dimension 1: Compliance Documentation

First Aid Only kits usually come with a label stating the ANSI class: Class A or Class B. Class A is the basic kit for common injuries. Class B is a larger, more complete kit. When I audit a customer's break room, that label is the first thing I look for.

With a custom kit, you can be just as compliant—if you can prove it. I've opened too many job boxes where someone threw in gauze and called it a first aid kit. If an OSHA inspector asks what's in it, some stuff isn't an answer.

Why does this matter? Because a missing item becomes an audit finding. In our Q1 2024 audit, 30% of custom kits we checked were missing at least one required item from the ANSI Class A list. Pre-built kits passed at a much higher rate.

Custom kits are only as consistent as the person building them. I once found three different brands of gauze in the same trauma bag. Not dangerous, but it makes restocking a nightmare. If a worker needs to know what's inside, a random mix is a problem.

The surprise wasn't the money I saved on custom supplies. It was how much hidden labor they created. Someone has to inventory, restock, and document every item. In my experience, custom kits are more likely to become empty boxes.

Dimension 3: Cost and Flexibility

First Aid Only kits are not the lowest upfront-cost option. If you already have bulk bandages and trauma shears, a custom kit can cost half as much upfront. But the true cost is the restocking system. A $20 custom kit that's empty in three months is more expensive than a $60 kit that gets refilled.

Custom kits make sense when your hazards are unusual. A welding shop needs burn dressings. A lab needs eye wash supplies. A construction site needs more trauma items. For those, a pre-built kit is only the starting point.

My rule: use a compliant baseline kit, then add what your specific work requires.

The Same Logic Applies to Welding Gloves

I assumed any good leather welding glove would work for TIG welding. Didn't verify. Turned out the dexterity was completely different.

TIG stands for tungsten inert gas. It requires precise control of the filler rod. A heavy MIG or stick glove is too stiff for that. Tillman welding gloves, especially the TIG line, use softer, lighter leather and a shorter cuff. If you're looking at Tillman welding gloves, check the style number to match the process.

Does that mean Tillman TIG welding gloves are better for every weld? No. For overhead stick welding, you want a heavier glove. A supplier who tells you this isn't for heavy fab work is more credible than one who sells a universal welding glove and hopes for the best.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: PASS vs. Panic

Having a fire extinguisher mounted next to the welding station is good. Knowing how to use it before the fire starts is better.

Per OSHA's portable fire extinguisher standard (29 CFR 1910.157), if you provide extinguishers for employee use, you need to train employees in their use. The method is PASS:

  1. Pull the pin.
  2. Aim at the base of the fire, not the flames.
  3. Squeeze the handle.
  4. Sweep from side to side.

When I ran a fire drill, the surprise wasn't the pressure gauge. It was how many people skipped step two. They aimed at the top of the flames because that's what looked natural. A two-minute training session fixed it.

That's the same pattern as first aid kits: the tool is only as good as the training behind it. A fire extinguisher that nobody knows how to use is just a red cylinder. Period.

So What Should You Choose?

If you're setting up a new facility or managing multiple locations, start with First Aid Only kits. The ANSI label gives you a defensible baseline, and the factory consistency means you don't have to build a contents list for every site.

If you have unique hazards, build a custom kit on top of a compliance kit. Add burn care for welding areas, chemical-specific supplies for labs, and assign one person to own restocking.

For precision welding, choose Tillman TIG welding gloves or an equivalent dedicated TIG welding glove. Use heavier gloves for heavy stick and MIG work. No matter what PPE you buy, train workers on the right way to use it—including how to use a fire extinguisher with PASS.

Real talk: I've seen First Aid Only sold to Acme distribution centers and to independent shops under the same SKU. The label was the same. The contents were the same. That consistency is hard to beat.

But don't buy a safety product just because it looks professional. Buy it for the specific job, verify the specs, and keep the training current. That's what I check before anything gets my approval stamp.
