Can You Use Latex Gloves for Food? Yes, But Ask a Better Question
Short answer: yes, the FDA Food Code does not ban latex gloves for food service. If you use single-use gloves, it says they must be used for one task and changed when contamination is likely. It doesn't set a material requirement. So latex gloves are technically 'allowed.'
But 'allowed' is a low bar. Latex proteins can trigger allergic reactions, and powdered latex gloves can carry those proteins into food. Many safety distributors, including us, have switched to nitrile for food handling because it offers similar dexterity without the latex allergen issue. This isn't a compliance move. It's risk management.
I used to assume that any disposable glove with 'foodservice' on the box was safe for food contact. Then I saw a case labeled 'general purpose' that didn't carry a food-contact declaration.
