The Right First Aid Kit for Your Workplace: A Scenario-Based Guide to Safety Equipment
When I first started coordinating safety supply orders for industrial clients, I assumed a first aid kit was a first aid kit. Grab the biggest one the budget allows, mount it on the wall, get back to work. It took about two years—or rather, two and a half when you count the full audit cycle—and one memorably expensive failed audit to realize that's exactly backwards.
The right safety setup depends entirely on what your people actually do, what hazards stand between them and the parking lot, and what standards apply to your industry. There's no universal best kit. There is, however, a right setup for your situation.
To make this practical, I sort safety equipment decisions into three scenarios. Figure out which one you're in, and the rest gets a lot easier:
- Scenario 1: Industrial or manufacturing — 50+ employees, machinery, shift work, regular compliance audits.
- Scenario 2: Small business or office — under 20 employees, no heavy machinery, normal building activity.
- Scenario 3: Construction or outdoor work — heights, power tools, remote or changing job sites.
Scenario 1: Industrial Facilities and Large Workforces
If you're running a plant, warehouse, or any facility where dozens of people work around machinery, your first aid capability has to cover a wide range of incidents. That's not being dramatic—it's the math of having a lot of workers doing physical tasks in close quarters.

A question I get from contractors and facility teams all the time: how to attach railing posts to an existing deck. There are a few approaches that work, and the right one depends on your framing.
If you're attaching to a rim joist, angle-cut or notch the post so it sits flush against the structural framing. Clamp it, then drill through the joist and secure it with 3/8-inch or 5/16-inch through-bolts, with washers on both sides. The post has to bear on the framing. Screws into the face of the joist don't provide reliable lateral strength.
If the post needs to be surface-mounted, lift a section of the decking to access the joists, set a heavy-duty metal post anchor bracket, and bolt through it into the framing below—not just into the deck boards. In both cases, the key is that the railing is tied to the structural frame, not to the surface material.
The common mistake I see is using long deck screws and walking away. That works for a few months—maybe a season, then the railing starts to wobble. I've watched a railing post attached that way fail during a site inspection in 2022. Nobody fell, but the inspector wrote it up, and the contractor had to redo the entire railing connection. Skipping the through-bolts saved maybe $15 and cost them a weekend of rework.

The industry has evolved significantly since 2020. ANSI Z308.1 set new expectations for kit contents, OSHA has been tighter about lockout/tagout enforcement, and impact protection standards for eyewear have improved. But the fundamentals haven't changed: know your hazards, buy the right equipment, and ensure people know where it is and how to use it. Get those three right, and the rest of the program tends to fall into place.
