If you're the person who ended up responsible for workplace safety supplies—and didn't expect to be—this one's for you. I've been managing purchasing for our facilities since 2020, and I've learned the hard way that "buy a first aid kit and call it done" doesn't actually work. What follows is a five-step checklist I wish I'd had when I started, plus a section on the mistakes I see people make (and have made myself).

Step 1: Walk Your Facility Before You Buy Anything
Before you even search for "first-aid-only" kits or start comparing prices, you need to know what your space actually requires. I get it—everyone wants a quick answer. It's tempting to think you can just buy one "all-purpose" kit and be covered. But the reality isn't that simple.
A single-person real estate office and a 40-person manufacturing floor have completely different needs. The size of the building matters less than the type of work happening inside it. OSHA sets expectations differently for general industry (1910.151 requires first aid training and supplies) and construction (1926.50 is even more specific). The standards exist for a reason, and the reason is that risk varies wildly.
Do this: walk the floor. Note the obvious hazards—machinery, chemicals, heights, heat sources. Check where fire extinguishers are mounted (or aren't). Look in the kitchen. Ask shift supervisors what injuries people have actually had on the job. That last question is way more useful than any compliance checklist.
Looking back, I should have done this before my first big supply order. At the time, I just ordered whatever the previous admin had been buying. Half the contents were expired, and the rest was the wrong type of kit for our operations. If I could redo that decision, I'd start with a proper assessment every single time. But given what I knew then, my choice was reasonable. Learn from me.
Step 2: Pick the Right First Aid Kit
Once you know your hazards, the next question is: what kind of kit do you need?
What "All-Purpose" Actually Covers
A search for "first aid only all-purpose emergency kit" will return a ton of results. The phrase "all-purpose" usually means the kit was designed for general use—offices, schools, light industrial, warehouses—rather than specialized scenarios like chemical burns, contaminated wounds, or long wilderness response. That's a fine default, but it's not a substitute for matching the kit to your risk profile.
If your facility handles chemicals, you might need an eyewash station and a chemical burn kit—a standard all-purpose kit won't cover that. If your crews work outdoors in high heat, you'll want extra cold packs and electrolyte supplies.
Also note: not all "all-purpose" kits meet the ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021 minimum requirements for workplace first aid kits. Check the contents list, not just the label.
Complete Kit vs. First Aid Bag Only
Here's something most people overlook: sometimes you need the refill, not the restock. If you already have a mounted kit, buying a whole new all-purpose unit is wasteful. That's where the "first aid bag only" option comes in. A durable, empty first aid bag lets you build a custom kit—or reorganize an existing one—without paying for 50 bandages you don't need.
For our two-person field teams, I actually bought empty bags and stocked them with the specific supplies our crews use daily: trauma pads, medical tape, burn gel, and eye irrigation. The standalone kit from a big box store had ninety-nine components and zero structure. A simple bag with a logical insert layout is easier to navigate under pressure. Don't underestimate how much easier it is for staff to find what they need when the arrangement actually makes sense.
Step 3: Know How to Use a Fire Extinguisher (Before You Need It)
This is probably the biggest gap in workplace safety. Search data confirms it: people are constantly looking up "how to use fire extinguisher" while an alarm is sounding. That's not the time to learn.
The memory hook is PASS:
- Pull the pin. This breaks the tamper seal and unlocks the handle.
- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire—not at the flames.

Simple, right? But people still freeze because they've never practiced. A 10-minute hands-on demo with your facility's own extinguishers makes a bigger difference than any poster on the wall.

If you're not aiming at the base of the fire within those first few seconds, you'll run out of agent mid-sweep. This is why training matters. You won't have time to think your way through PASS in a real emergency.
Also worth noting: extinguishers are classified by fire type—A for ordinary combustibles (wood, paper), B for flammable liquids, C for electrical, D for metals, K for cooking oils. A multipurpose ABC-rated unit covers most general workplaces. But if you have a commercial kitchen or metalworking operation, you need the right rating, and NFPA 10 requires it. According to NFPA 10 (Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers), extinguishers need monthly visual checks and annual professional maintenance. If you don't know when yours were last inspected, that's a problem worth fixing this week.
Step 4: Put Equipment Where People Can Actually Reach It
You can have the best first aid kit and the finest extinguishers on the market. If they're in a locked supply closet, they're worthless.
Placement rules I follow now:
- Fire extinguishers should be mounted where a person doesn't have to travel more than 75 feet in normal occupancy—closer in higher-hazard areas (again, this is NFPA 10 guidance).
- First aid stations should be visible and unobstructed. Not behind a stack of boxes. Not inside a cabinet with a broken latch.
- Multi-floor buildings: each floor gets its own kit and extinguisher. Don't assume the ground floor covers everyone.
I want to say we check our equipment quarterly, but honestly—it might be every six months. Don't be like me. Put a recurring reminder in your calendar, and assign one person to own it.
Step 5: Secure the Perimeter—Yes, Fencing Is Part of Safety
This step usually gets skipped on workplace safety checklists, and it's a big one for facilities with any outdoor or semi-public area. Safety fencing prevents unauthorized access, keeps people out of hazardous zones, and—if your site backs onto a residential area or a walking trail—keeps stray dogs and other animals away from dangerous equipment. When we opened our third location, I completely missed perimeter fencing in my initial scope. Quick note on security gear: if your search history includes "handcuffs near me" or similar law-enforcement supply terms, that's a separate category from workplace safety. Restraints aren't PPE, and any vendor trying to sell you "safety-grade" handcuffs should raise a red flag. Work with a licensed security equipment supplier for that kind of product.
Step 6: The Mistakes That Make a Safety Program Useless

Low-end kits aren't always a bad value. But some "bargain" kits contain components that don't meet the ANSI/ISEA standard, and the difference usually doesn't show up until someone actually needs supplies. Mistake 2: Ignoring Expiration Dates
Most first aid supplies have genuine expiration dates—ointments, sterile saline, antiseptic wipes all degrade. A kit that's been sitting untouched for four years can quietly become useless. I found a sealed, pristine-looking kit dated 2019 in our stockroom in 2024. Still sealed, still looked fine—but the contents had expired years earlier. Build a quarterly check into your routine.
Mistake 3: Training Nobody
Buying equipment without training people is like owning a fire extinguisher and never learning what's inside the canister. One more thing: prices and regulations change. Verify current rates and check OSHA and NFPA sources for the latest requirements. I try to confirm our compliance every six months. It's not obsessive, but it's enough to catch major updates.
